Ed Whitacre: Part 2

June 18, 2009 at 2:30 pm

There is in fact, more to the Whitacre appointment at GM that needs to be briefly  mentioned. In May of 2008 Whitacre was elected to the board of ExxonMobil, the world’s largest publicly traded international oil and gas company. ExxonMobil runs 29,000 service stations around the globe. Presumably the goal with these service stations is to sell fuel. One of the major criticisms of the US automobile industry is that they have not done enough to create fuel efficient vehicles. Hence these two affiliations of Whitacre’s appear to be at odds. What does he have to say about this and how will he work to resolve the inherent conflict of interest?
